All These Natural Hair Care Products Can Only Mean One Thing...

All these natural hair care products can only mean one thing....

I big chopped!

And when I say big chopped I mean it! My hair is the shortest it's ever been.

And you know what? I love it!

You see, this is about the fifth time I tried to transition from relaxed to natural hair. There is something about the four-month mark. That's when I get frustrated with the tangles and straight nappy-ness that comes with having two hair textures. I almost always end up relaxing it. Almost.

This time around, I had got to 17 weeks and had already told myself that I would use a kiddie perm this time. Then I considered just applying the relaxer and washing it right out. No...how about cutting it into a pixie cut. Then I can relax my hair after that.

My thought process was all over the place!

I ended thinking that if I was going to cut it, I might as well big chop and see what it looks like. I could always go back to relaxed hair if I hated the way my natural hair looked.

At first, I looked crazy! I cut one side then called my daughter who has been natural for 3 years. I just started cutting my hair where I thought the line of demarcation was. In some spots, I couldn't even tell. I definitely messed up. I'll eventually go to the salon to fix it. I face-timed my daughter so she could see what it looked like.

"Oh my gosh mom!". My husband? He's not feeling it.

But you know what? You couldn't tell me nothing. I used some curly hair moisturizer and a little Eco styling gel and was ready to show the world my new natural doo.

My kids are natural so I already have a nice stash of natural hair care products to try out. Plus, I picked up a few here and there the last time I attempted to go natural.

That's what I am most excited about. I get to try out all of the new products out there. When I was 11 with my little afro, there was nothing to use but Blue Magic hair grease and water. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

I'd love for you to follow me on my journey as I try to navigate this whole natural hair thing. And any tips are greatly appreciated!

If you are still relaxed, don't worry. There's no judgment here. It took me over 30 years to come to this decision and so far I love it.

Did you transition or big chop? Are you still relaxed? Do you think you will ever go natural?

  1. Your curls are so beautiful! I've been natural for 7 years protective styling has been my thing and has helped my hair grow so much and super fast. The only thing with me is because I'm always wearing protective styles I never know how to style my curls. Good luck on your hair journey it's a very fun experience.

  7. I transitioned for about 1 year before I big chopped. I let my hair grow long and then I cut it again. I've been natural since 2010, so it's been a while and I'll never use relaxers again, especially since I discovered e'tae.

  16. I'm still relaxed. I have considered going natural, but each time I talk myself out of it. Maybe I'll do it one day. You are correct in saying that there is an abundance of natural hair care products. That's encouraging.

  17. I attempted to transition, and it was terrible. When I got to 5 months, I just came home from work and cut it all off.

  18. I big chopped and felt so free. My husband (who wasn't my husband then) had all types of things to say to me in private, but he supported me nonstop in public. Now, I'm fully natural, and loving it!

  19. I did not big chop. I was scared of losing hair but I did a few clippings throughout my transitioning journey...
